Welcome to Weiß Schwarz

Weiß Schwarz is a trading card game published by Bushiroad that lets you build decks around your favorite anime and manga franchises. Unlike many TCGs, every card in Weiß Schwarz belongs to a specific IP — think Sword Art Online, Hololive, Demon Slayer, and dozens more. The game blends resource management, board presence, and a unique damage system that keeps every match unpredictable until the very end.

Understanding the Game Zones

Before your first game, you need to know where cards live on the table. Each player uses the following zones:

  • Hand: Cards you can play. You start with five and draw one each turn.
  • Stage: Three front-row slots and two back-row slots where your characters stand.
  • Clock: Where damage goes. Holds up to six cards — at seven, you Level Up.
  • Level Zone: Tracks your level (0–3). Reaching Level 4 means you lose.
  • Stock: Your resource pool, generated by attacking. Used to pay for card effects and extra costs.
  • Waiting Room: Your discard pile, also a key resource in many effects.
  • Deck: Your 50-card library. When it runs out, shuffle your waiting room back in.

The Turn Structure

  1. Stand Phase: Stand (untap) all your rested characters.
  2. Draw Phase: Draw one card from your deck.
  3. Clock Phase: Optionally place a card from your hand into your Clock to draw two cards (Clock Draw).
  4. Main Phase: Play characters from your hand, use event cards, and activate abilities.
  5. Attack Phase: Declare attacks with your front-row characters.
  6. Encore Phase: Pay to bring back defeated characters, then discard down to seven.

How Damage Works

This is Weiß Schwarz's most distinctive mechanic. When your character attacks, your opponent takes damage equal to the attacking character's Soul value — they reveal that many cards from the top of their deck and place them in their Clock. However, if a Climax card is revealed during damage resolution, all damage is — a mechanic called a "Cancel." This means no lead is ever truly safe, and comebacks are always possible.

What Are Climax Cards?

Every legal deck must include exactly eight Climax cards. These are special cards that, when played from your hand, give powerful one-turn bonuses (Soul boosts, card draws, or special triggers). They also act as a safety net in your deck — when one shows up during a damage check, it cancels incoming damage. Managing your Climax count and timing when to play them is a core skill.

Choosing Your First Deck

Bushiroad sells pre-built Trial Decks for most sets — these are a great way to start playing immediately without needing to build from scratch. Trial Decks are 50 cards, ready to play, and usually feature core cards from a set. Once you're comfortable, you can upgrade into a full constructed deck using booster packs or singles.

Key Tips for New Players

  • Don't ignore the back row — support characters there power up your front row.
  • Learn when to Clock Draw and when to hold your hand.
  • Pay attention to your opponent's Level — pressure differently at Level 1 vs. Level 3.
  • Read your Climax cards carefully — their trigger icons matter a lot.

Weiß Schwarz has a learning curve, but once the systems click, it becomes an incredibly rewarding game. Grab a Trial Deck, find a local shop with a WS community, and dive in!
